True North Times – July 2011 – The EXTREME Heat Issue

Thursday, July 21st, 2011
Retweet
From The Landscaper

Howdy folks!  It’s been a long time since our last issue, & has really felt ‘non stop’ around here since the ice storm in February.  Can someone tell me what’s with this ‘all or nothing’ weather pattern?  It’s eerily reminiscent of what we experienced last year, excessively wet spring, extremely hot/dry summer.  In this issue, I want to share some information with what’s been happening in our company, with the weather, & things you can do to care for your lawn and landscaping!  But first, allow us to brag a little about our…

Project of the Month

Back in March we were contacted by a company called US Water Services out of Minnesota.  They had an Ethanol Convention coming up at the end of June in Indianapolis, & they wanted to attract people to their display & ‘blow the doors off’ the competition.  All they knew is they wanted corn, water, & a rural Indiana look.  Oh yeah, you only have 1 weekend to build it as well.  Please see pictures below.  We incorporated a 2 dimensional barn structure (kudos to McGuire Scenic), a bunch of corn (kudos to Dave Maroney of Ladoga, IN), a stream, pond, lots of stone & plants.  Long story short, we built it, they won ‘Best of Show’, then we tore it all down in 1 long Wednesday night!  KUDOS to the True North Team for pulling this off in 1 long Saturday & Sunday of extreme building effort!!!

US Water Services Before and After

The Team That Made it All Possible

Re-Cap

We’ve discussed this in past issues, but it’s worth mentioning again as it’s still an issue and a challenge.  Last year we experienced what many considered to be a 100 year drought.  The faucet went off in early July & didn’t get opened back up until Thanksgiving.  We then essentially went straight into a long, hard winter.  Plants & turf that went into winter was for the most part either stressed, or in many cases, dead.

This March -May, as weather would allow, we were renovating a lot of turf (aerating/overseeding/slit-seeding), and pulling out/replacing dead trees and shrubs, evergreens in particular.  But we are still not out of the woods!  We have been receiving many calls from people saying that trees that were looking good this spring have now lost or are losing leaves.  In many cases, this is still a symptom of the stress from LAST year, not necessarily from the heat & dry as of late, although this latest spell may be accentuating the issue.  Now unfortunately, our poor lawns just can’t get a break.  Many non-irrigated properties are going dormant already, & our mowing crews are having to skip many properties.  So all in all, it’s been a very difficult pattern to adapt to for working, and very difficult on plant material.

TURF

As mentioned above, turf is stressed!  The excessively wet spring followed by hot humid weather is a perfect recipe for a wide array of fungus in turf (brown, patchy, rusty & even sometimes grey looking spots & areas).  Now of course, we’re being faced with the issue once again of not enough (ie. no) rain!  Turf is really an amazing plant & can go a long time without significant water.  If you are able, watering long & deeply 2-3X per week in the mornings will go a long way in keeping your lawn somewhat green & alive looking.  Also, you may want to be thinking already about the importance of heavy aeration/overseeding in September/early October.

Plants

We’re talking trees, shrubs, & perennials here now, not corn or soybeans!  I’m sorry for a lot of the farmers out there that had to re-seed 2-3x due to the wet weather just to get their crops in.  We sold & installed A LOT of the above mentioned from May on, & continue to do so.  I recently heard a great saying from a Client of ours, which does a good job of summing up in laymans terms what plants do… ‘SLEEP, CREEP, LEAP’.  The 1st season in the ground, plantsSLEEP.  They’re shocked either from the dig (in the case of field dug balled & burlapped plants) or from being pulled from the pots they’ve grown up in, having their roots pulled & slashed, & being put in a new home (your yard!).  This is a critical year for adequate watering.  You don’t want bone dry, & you don’t want sloppy, muddy wet.  Cool, moist conditions are what most plants are looking for & needing.  The 2nd season, they begin to CREEP as they put out their horizontal roots & begin establishing themselves, this is still a critical year for watering & attention to them!  Miracle Grow in the feeder packets from Lowes that you can simply thread on to your garden hose is a GREAT & simple thing you can do a few times/season to help your plants out.  By season 3, they should be well established & will begin to LEAP.  This is often the year you will see amazing growth on trees in particular.  So remember, don’t neglect your plants, they need your help!  Just like an infant, baby them along, & by year 3 they’ll be just like teenagers that act like they don’t need you anymore!

Hope you are having a great summer, stay cool if you can, be safe, and talk to you soon!!!

True North Times

July 2010

From The Landscaper
Almost 2 months have passed since our last True North Times. We’re nearly finished the majority of spring work we sold and are now looking at a little break before the late summer and fall push of work begins. Every season is unique, this year being no different. What a crazy bunch of weather we’ve had since March! I thought I’d take a few lines to talk about turf fertilization. With all our moisture, followed by heat and humidity, there have been a lot of fungal issues showing up and so its been on my mind. There’s 2 things I think a homeowner should never do themselves and should ALWAYS hire out if they’re able. One is install a patio (WAY to much work!). Two is fertilize your own grass. The difference I’ve seen over the years in properties that only fertilize even 3 times (we like and offer a 5 step program), is HUGE. To those of you who fertilize your own turf, achieve a decent result, and enjoy it, I applaud you! But think about it… you have to purchase/own a spreader, store and maintain it. Then you have to take the time to go out and buy fertilizer and herbicide, or a weed and feed mix. THEN, you have to take the time to mix it, spread it, and hope you applied it right! Are you really ahead? Anyways, in the two pictures, both are commercial properties we maintain. Pics were taken in May, one is on a program, the other is not. Can you say Dandelions? And with the moist and warm conditions we had this spring, BOY did we have dandelions! There’s about a 2-3 week period where if you cut them one day, the next day they’re back! Anyways, there’s no ‘magic wand’, but if you give a turf fertilization, ‘weed and feed program’ a try over an extended period, you’ll never go back. If you’re gonna have grass anyways, healthy grass just looks good. A green vibrant lawn also chokes out weeds (violet, clover, dandelions, and crabgrass to name a few), rather then the other way around. Ask us about our five step program, coupled with fall aeration and overseeding, you’ll see noticeable results over time, usually within one season.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Canada Red Chokeberry

I love this tree for lots of reasons. Where I grew up in Canada, Chokecherry bushes are everywhere in the wild. The sweet/tart berries are used for jam, wine, or eating straight off the bush. This is the tree version of that hardy shrub, minus the fruit. They are VERY hardy (Zone 2), and make a great ‘hybrid’ when you want something bigger then an ornamental, but smaller then an all out shade tree. Very discreet white flowers in spring, with leaves that start out green but then turn to a dark maroon, almost like a Crimson King Maple. Up to 25′ tall x 18′ wide, broadly pyramidal in form. Just a great, hardy, pretty tree that is somewhat under utilized here.

Bubbling Rock & Basalt Column

We’ve installed a LOT of bubbling features this year! Why? Well, they’re an affordable, easy way for anyone to have the movement and sound of water, especially in a small or intimate space, without the cost of a larger pondless feature or water garden/pond. Our most common are the two pictured, just a good old, drilled piece of ‘moss rock’ sandstone from southern Indiana, OR a more expensive but super cool drilled piece of Basalt from Mongolia (they’re super dense, heavy, and look like wet, rusted metal… AWESOME). Some recent comments from two homeowners have been… ‘It seems like such a little thing, but I just love sitting on the porch now or driving home and seeing it’, and ‘I can’t tell you how such a simple thing has brought so much enjoyment, hearing it and watching the birds that come’. Let us know if you’d be interested in a bubbler! They install quickly, are beautiful, and are VERY maintenance friendly.

True North Times

April 2010

From The Landscaper
Well everyone, it seems that all the snow pack acted as an insulator blanket… or something! Something caused things to ‘push’ early, in my 12 years in the Midwest, I can’t remember a spring this early and warm. We finally got started on mowing the 2nd week in April, and we had many properties that honestly could have been mowed the last week in March… we just weren’t ready yet! We’re officially having our busiest year ever, lots of people wanted to ‘get going early’ on curb appeal, so we’ve been doing lots of edging and mulching, little ‘feel good, curb appeal touchup’ stuff. Turf fertilization began near the end of March, and we’ve been moving lots of plant material as well. Throw in a few patios, landscape jobs, water features… its made for a busy time! We’ve just been keeping our ‘heads down and our elbows up’… it seems to be working!

Hope to see many of you soon, either at one of our two Open Houses (Saturday April 24, and Saturday May 8, see more information below), or at the Orchard in Bloom Festival at Holiday Park, April 30-May 2 (see more below). We’re officially selling June on landscaping, and it won’t be long until that’s gone and we’re selling July, so hurry if you want to ‘get on the board’ with a project. Enjoy the great weather!

Welcome to what is I hope the 1st of many True North Times to come. This is something I’ve wanted to see happen for years, it’s finally time. We’ve grown a great team, & are trying to ‘dream bigger dreams’. I hope to see & talk w/many of you soon… thanks for your friendship & business!

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Dwarf Hinokai Cypress

LOVE this evergreen. If you want a hardy, slow growing, VERY COOL looking evergreen, you can’t go wrong. This is a BEAUTIFUL focal, specimen evergreen that’s hardy in Zone 5. Partial shade to full sun, 8′ tall x 3′ wide (or thereabouts). Soft, dark green foliage that forms an irregular ‘upright’. Love em! Call for details.

We will update you with more specifics on our next newsletter. Don’t hesitate to contact us w/questions or to schedule installation.

TREEMENDOUS DEAL
Never say never, right? OK, then how about, ‘We will not EVER offer a deal like this again…’ 2″+ caliper, 14′ tall, BEAUTIFUL Red Maples (October Glory, Red Sunset, Autumn Flame), 12′ tall 3 clump River Birch, delivered, installed, One Year Guarantee… $180!!! This is an UNBEATABLE value, while supplies last!

WATER FEATURES – There is NOTHING like the sight & sound of water to draw you in, relax & soothe your soul. We install bubbling features (rocks, columns, earns, you name it…), small to large pondless waterfalls, small to large ponds with streams & waterfalls spilling into them, fish & plants. We are one of only around 300 CAC (certified) contractors w/Aquascape Designs, the 2nd largest manufacturer of water feature products in the world. You can see some great pictures & gain valuable information at the following websites, www.watergardening.com, www.truenorthlandscaping.com.

RAINWATER CAPTURE – This is EXCITING stuff. What’s our most valuable resource? Ummm… What are we incredibly good at wasting and not managing well??? Yup, WATER. Here’s the long story short, here’s some SIMPLE SOLUTIONS. None of these things in & of themselves are a silver bullet, but lots of them combined are ‘Silver BB’s. You can do your part & be a ‘Silver BB’ w/these SIMPLE SOLUTIONS.

RAIN BARREL – Awesome, simple. All the old farmers where I grew up in Canada were doing this 60 years ago, before it was ‘hip’. But it is hip, click here to see the beautiful and functional rain barrel we offer.

RAIN GARDEN – These can be EXTREMELY functional AND look great! You can have both.

RAIN X CHANGE – 500 Gal. RainXChange system has an initial installation price starting at around $10/gal.+, depending what we ‘tie it into’ on top. BUT, a 500 Gal. system will capture up to12,000 Gal./year! Year after year, this REALLY adds up. You can water your plants, garden, etc. with the water you’ve ‘harvested’ off your roof, AND have it run a beautiful above ground feature at the same time. We’d LOVE to talk w/you more about this BEAUTIFUL and SUSTAINABLE alternative!
